An Afternoon Concert
with EILEN JEWELL at La Tourelle
*** 4 pm Sunday, October 8, 2017 ***

ADVANCE TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT: door tickets will be available if weather is with us on Sunday!

Eilen Jewell, “the Queen of the Minor Key,” returns to Ithaca for Sunday afternoon concert October 8, 2017, at 4 pm at La Tourelle, 1150 Danby Rd.  Her six previous albums have all earned critical acclaim and the brand new release, “Downhearted Blues,” is also getting excellent reviews (“A rootsy, rocking record-collector’s love affair of old songs…with plenty of sultry shimmy-and-shake.” –NPR Music. This time, she’s covering some of her blues heroes, including Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, and Willie Dixon.
On Down Hearted Blues (September 2017 Signature Sounds) Eilen and her long-time road band (Jerry Miller, Shawn Supra, Jason Beek) rip through greasy versions of dark blues like Charles Sheffield’s It’s Your Voodoo Working, Willie Dixon’s You Know My Love, and Albert Washington’s One of These Days. The band also strips down the sound, trading in drums and electric instruments for washboards, mandolins, and banjos to cover songs like Memphis Minnie’s Nothin’ in Rambling, Bessie Smith’s Down Hearted Blues, and Moonshine Kate’s Poor Girl’s Story.
For over a decade Eilen Jewell has taken her brand of sultry surf-noir and dynamic Americana music to cities from Melbourne to Madrid to Manhattan. Her subtle but powerful musical approach, combined with her warm stage presence and evocative original lyrics, continue to gain her the loyalty of fans worldwide.  Sea of Tears made it to the top 10 on many American radio stations; it earned her “Album of the Year” honors on the Freeform American Roots chart and Queen of the Minor Key exponentially expanded her fan base.
If you’ve seen Eilen’s shows at Grassroots (or been to another Rootabaga Boogie concert) you’ll understand the buzz about Eilen’s music: “Not to be missed!”–No Depression.
ADVANCE TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT, if the weather is good, ADDITIONAL TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE AT DOOR for $25. (Cash or check only please, no credit card.) The afternoon will include a special informal barbecue and La Tourelle is also making available special room packages for folks who’d like to enjoy the concert and also stay at the inn overnight.

BARBECUE FOOD will be available for sale starting at 3 pm: pulled pork and jerk chicken sandwiches, grilled veggie wrap with quinoa pesto, salads, brownies, strawberry shortcake, too. (Lots of good things to drink, too, available from La Tourelle, including Steve Selin’s small-batch South Hill cider.) And YES, there will be ROOM FOR DANCING!
